Winnie is Dying...
Im heartbroken. Winnie is my first real, on my own, out of the family house, dog. She is so special to me, you have no idea. I remember the first day I saw her, about 15 years ago. I had decided to adopt a dog, I was ready for the responsibility. I had my own apartment, J and I had just started dating, I needed a furry friend. I looked up local animal rescues and found one not too far from where I was working. As I drove up to the rescue I remember thinking how sad it was that so many animals were homeless. How sad and scared they looked. I walked into the room where the smaller dogs were held in cages. The moment my eyes met Winnie's, I knew she was the one for me.
I told the worker I found my new pup. She opened the cage and Winnie flew into my arms. It was love at first sight. She was 7 months then. I took her to the car and gave her a brand new bone. Settled her on her very own clean blankie and home we went.
She is a wonderful animal. So loving. She's been with me through so many ups and downs. Through my falling in love with J, getting married, having my girls. Moving to our first home. So many things we all shared.
The last couple of weeks I noticed that Winnie was different. She wasnt lifting her head, she was moping and wheezing a little. I knew something was really wrong. We went to the vet and after x-rays and bloodwork got the news that she was really sick. The x-rays showed an enlarged heart and the bloodwork, kidneys that were failing. We were told to get a more accurate idea of what was going on, we needed to get an ultrasound.
Yesterday was the ultrasound. Took all of a minute for my friend B, our vet, to say the awful words, "im so sorry". The ultrasound showed that her heart valves are being squished by a massive tumor. Her valves cant pump any of the fluids and her belly is filling. She is going into heart failure. There is no hope, no meds, nothing. She said that we should say goodbye in the next couple of days. Im so sad. I can't imagine my life without her in it. I mean I knew she was getting older and we wouldnt have her for much longer, but the illness came so fast.
I feel so shell shocked. Im not ready,I am just not ready to not have her here. I know I wont let her suffer. Im just not ready to say goodbye. I love her so much. I will probably take the weekend to snuggle with her, take care of her.
We lost her pup sister, Cricket, a couple of months ago. When Winnie first came home, she was lonely. I called the rescue and told them she needed a friend. I couldnt handle going into the kennel again. I trusted them to pick the perfect sister for Winnie and they did. They both lived and shared our lives for over 15 years. They'll be together again soon, free from their ailing bodies, free to run in the clouds...free.
